Community Outreach
High School
The BETSI Project provides ongoing support to high school biology teachers and students in the Sweetwater Union High School District (SUHSD).
- The BETSI Leadership Institute introduces teachers and selected students to advanced biotechnology techniques, activities and theory included in the BETSI curriculum and assists them in integrating these classroom activities into the high school classroom.
- The BETSI Mobile Lab provides high school access to laboratory equipment and technical support to ensure the successful implementation of the curriculum and associated activities taught at the BETSI Leadership Institute.
- Southwestern College Biotechnology Program students serve as role models and teaching assistants for high school students as well as lab assistants and technical support for high school teachers.
This extensive outreach and network of support is one of the most important components in the success of this project and is essential to broaden biotechnology instruction, leading to more students accessing high technology careers and college education.
The BETSI Project currently provides high school outreach to Bonita Vista High School, Eastlake High School and Hilltop High School. In the future, the BETSI Project plans to gradually expand and provide outreach to all schools in the Sweetwater Union High School District, the largest high school district in California.
